Safety Checklist | Halloween
Happy Halloween! It’s that time of the year when ghosts, goblins, and – unfortunately – increased property claims come out of the woodwork.
While this holiday comes with delicious treats and spooky costumes, it also historically brings an uptick in vandalism, property damage, and theft claims. It’s just a few hours before Halloween Trick or Treaters arrive, take a quick moment to go through this checklist to ensure you are safe & prepared.
- Prepare your home to keep trick-or-treaters safe. If you’re putting up decorations, be mindful of extension cords, open flames, or anything that could be hazardous to children who approach your home.
- Don’t use real candles in your pumpkins, and avoid open flames. Battery-operated candles and glow sticks work just as well as the real thing and reduce the risk of a house fire. In fact, 44% of house fires on Halloween are caused by decorations or costumes being too close to open flames.
- Be mindful of pets on your property. If you have furry friends, they may not be used to large crowds approaching your front door and/or ringing the doorbell. Be sure to take extra precautions to keep your animals – and neighbors – safe.
- Park your car in a safe place. Halloween is the fifth biggest holiday for stolen cars, according to the most recent data. If you don’t have a garage, find an area with good visibility to reduce the chance of theft or vandalism.
