How often do insurance agents think of the Roman Empire?

Insurance Agents Think of the Roman Empire, Too

From: Roman & Funeral Customs

You may have asked your partner, friends or family how often they think of the Roman Empire. But have you asked an Insurance Agent? If not, their answer may surprise you, too.

Me: “Mac, how often do you think of the Roman Empire?”

Mac: “Oh often, almost everyday.”

Now, I generally wouldn’t believe Mac as he can be

very sarcastic. But after doing some digging, it turns out modern insurance has The Roman Empire to thank. The Ancient Romans are technically the inventors of insurance. Roman soldiers wanted to have financial protection for their families if they were to fall in battle, so they created what was called “Burial Clubs.”

These burial clubs were a very early form of “final expense insurance.” Members of the club would pitch in to help with funeral costs and provide the fallen soldiers’ family with necessities for a time. Funeral funds often included lavish accessories, like a procession of performers, musicians, mimes, professional mourners. Actors would often attend and dress as the deceased soldier’s ancestors, wearing wax masks and guiding them to the after life. These funds helped the family pay for the cost of burial and protected them from large amounts of debt.

Now, maybe you should be thinking of the Roman Empire everyday, too. And if you’ve been looking for insurance, dig no further. Contact us today for Business, Auto or Personal Insurance | 509.928.7528.
